Does a 2006 Toyota Tacoma 6 Cylinder Have a Timing Chain?

Toyota equipped the 2006 Tacoma Base V6 and PreRunner V6 models with a 4.0-liter V-6 engine coupled to a six-speed manual transmission as standard equipment. A five-speed automatic transmission was available as an option. The 1GR-FE engine -- one of the engines in the GR engine family from Toyota -- has a die-cast aluminum block and aluminum dual overhead cam cylinder heads.

Engine Timing

  • The 1GR-FE engine uses a timing chain to transfer drive from the crankshaft to the camshafts. To control the engine's 24 valves, the 1GR-FE uses the variable valve timing with intelligence system -- or VVT-i -- developed by Toyota. The engine uses oil pressure to adjust the relationship between the camshaft drive chain and intake camshaft, which in turn adjusts the timing between closing the exhaust valves and opening the intake valves.
