The oxygen sensor on your Suzuki reads the percentage of oxygen in the exhaust gases and transmits this number to the engine's computer in milliamps. The computer, armed with this information, can determine if the car is running lean or rich and adjust the pulse width of the fuel injector to compensate. A bad O2 sensor can cause the engine to stumble, stall or start hard. If let go long enough, internal damage to the engine will occur from the extreme rich or lean condition.
Open the hood of your Suzuki vehicle and find the battery cable on the negative battery terminal. Remove the retaining bolt from the cable ends with a wrench, then remove the negative battery cable from the battery.
Locate the oxygen sensors in your car or truck. You will find them in several locations. The first is the exhaust pipe near the catalytic converter and the other is in the head pipe or exhaust manifold near the engine. In either case, access to them is better from under the vehicle.
Raise the front of your Suzuki off the ground with a jack and support it on a set of jack stands. Place the stands under the frame or front suspension, making sure the ground under them is solid and even.
Slide under the vehicle and locate the oxygen sensor in the exhaust pipe if it is there. Separate the wiring harness connector on the wiring coming from the sensor from the connector on the car by releasing the locking tab on the connector, then pull the two halves apart.
Place an oxygen sensor socket on the body of the sensor and turn it counterclockwise with a ratchet until you can remove the sensor from the exhaust system, then discard the old sensor. Install the new sensor into the hole and tighten it with the oxygen sensor socket and ratchet. Do not use thread locker or anti-seize compounds on the sensor as it can damage the sensor and cause false readings.
Connect the wiring harness connector from the new sensor to the connector on the car. Push the two connectors together until they lock in place. If you have a second sensor upstream, or near the engine, repeat the process to replace it.
Raise the front of your Suzuki with a jack until it is off the jack stands. Remove the stands from under the vehicle and lower it to the ground. Install the negative battery cable on the negative battery terminal, then install the retaining bolt and tighten it with a wrench.
