How to Remove a GM Quick-Disconnect Fuel Filter

The fuel filter on newer GM vehicles uses a quick-disconnect fitting to make removal and installation of the filter easier. Although in theory it makes it easier, it's not always obvious how these fittings come off, at least not to someone who isn't a mechanic for GM. Once you know the correct tricks however, removing a GM quick-disconnect fuel filter can be done in under five minutes, with the added bonus of needing no special tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Drain pan
  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Lift up the vehicle using the jack and put it own on top of four jack stands to evenly distribute the weight of the vehicle, making sure it is high enough in the air for you to move around underneath.

  • Crawl underneath the vehicle and locate the fuel filter, which is typically near the gas tank along one side of the frame rails. Set the drain pan underneath the fuel filter.

  • Locate the white, almost translucent clips located between the black fuel line and the fuel filter. Pinch the clips together while simultaneously pulling the black fuel line off of the fuel filter. Then unbolt the filter from the vehicle using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.
