How to Replace the Brake Light on a 2002 Hyundai Accent

The 2002 Hyundai Accent is the most compact car available in the Hyundai line for that model year. The base model is equipped with a 1.5-liter, 4-cylinder engine. The GS and GL models include a slightly larger, 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine. The 2002 Accent is available in two body styles, a 2-door hatchback and a 4-door sedan. Use an 1157 bulb to replace the brake light bulb in the event of a failure.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Open the trunk of your Hyundai.

  • Remove the two retaining screws on the inboard edge of the brake light assembly used to retain it to the car's body, using a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the brake light assembly straight off the car. Locate the light bulb socket on the rear of the assembly.

  • Turn the socket on the back of the assembly counterclockwise, then pull it out of the assembly. Pull the bulb out of the socket and discard it.

  • Install a new bulb into the socket and insert the socket into the rear of the assembly. Turn the socket clockwise to lock it into position.

  • Position the brake light on the rear of the car body, and install the two retaining screws. Tighten the screws with a Phillips screwdriver. Close the trunk and step on the brake pedal to verify that the brake light is working properly.
