How to Install Speakers in a 1996 Honda Accord

The stock speakers in the 1996 Honda Accord offer a level of performance in keeping with other vehicles in its class. The speakers and the stereo system are married together to provide a pedestrian listening experience when compared to the level of clarity and power offered by aftermarket components. Accord owners who need to replace damaged speakers or who wish to upgrade their factory installed speakers, can enlist the help of a car audio professional or swap the stock speakers for new ones themselves.

Things You'll Need

  • 10 mm wrench
  • Flat screwdriver (or trim panel removal tool)
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • 6 1/2-inch speakers
  • Park the Accord and turn off the engine. Pull the hood release lever and move to the front of the vehicle.

  • Lift the hood. Loosen the bolt that secures the negative battery cable clamp to the negative battery post with the 10 mm wrench. Move the battery cable away from the battery terminal. Return to the inside of the Honda.

  • Remove the plastic screw covers from each of the door panels. The caps are located below the side mirror panels and can be removed with a trim panel removal tool or flat screwdriver.

  • Remove the screws beneath the panel covers with a Phillips-head screwdriver.

  • Pry the door panel away from the Accord's doors with a flat screwdriver or trim panel removal tool. Pull the panels away from the door and reach between the panel and the door to disconnect the wiring connections for the locks and window operation. Remove the panel and set it aside.

  • Remove the three screws around the door panel speakers with the Phillips-head screwdriver.

  • Pull the speaker from the speaker dock and disconnect the speaker wires from the back of each 6 1/2-inch speaker.

  • Connect the Honda's speaker wires to the back of the new speakers and place it into the speaker mount. Replace the three screws around each speaker to secure them into place.

  • Align the door panels against the door and connect the wiring connectors for the door locks and window operation switch.

  • Press the door panel firmly against the door itself to secure the panel back onto the Accord's door.

  • Replace the screws at the forward-most upper corner (near the side mirror panel) with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Replace the covering caps over the screws and press them into place. Return to the engine compartment.

  • Place the negative battery cable clamp back around the negative battery terminal. Tighten the bolt that secures the cable's clamp to the battery post with the 10 mm wrench. Close the Accord's hood.
