How to Install Vinyl on a Subwoofer Box

Subwoofer boxes can add low-end tunes to your car or truck stereo. But most people don't want to see a bare box sitting in the vehicle. To fix this problem, you can wrap the box in vinyl and match it to the inside of the vehicle. The difficulty of this project depends on the size and shape of the subwoofer box, but it can be done at home.

Things You'll Need

  • Permanent marker
  • Vinyl
  • Air compressor and air line
  • Pneumatic glue gun
  • Spray-grade upholstery contact adhesive
  • Straight razor blades
  • Set the subwoofer box in the vehicle. Trace the perimeter of the visible area-the part of the box that you want to cover with vinyl-using the permanent marker. Then remove the box and set it on a clean work surface.

  • Lay out the vinyl on top of the subwoofer box and cut it to an approximate size using a razor blade. Leave at least one foot of space around your approximate coverage area to give you more leeway with the vinyl.

  • Lay the vinyl face down on the work surface. Fill the glue gun with the contact cement and connect the gun to the air compressor via the air line. Spray the back surface of the vinyl with glue, spraying light coats at first, then going back over the surface again. Do the same for the subwoofer box, and go outside of the lines you made in Step 1. Allow the glue to dry and get tacky to the touch, which takes approximately 10 minutes.

  • Pick up the vinyl and lay down a small section onto the subwoofer box. Hold the remaining vinyl at a 90-degree angle to the panel and rub the vinyl down against the box, keeping it smooth. If you need to get around a tight curve or a corner, pull the vinyl with one hand and push it flat with the other. Work the vinyl across the box until you've covered all of the visible areas.

  • Cut off the excess vinyl using the razor blades. Cut large X-shapes for the subwoofer holes, then cut slits in the vinyl, approximately two nches apart, around the perimeter of the hole. Tuck the vinyl into the holes and cut off any excess.
