Dodge Neon Car Stereo Installation

The Dodge and Plymouth Neon comes standard with an AM/FM stereo and single-disc CD player. There are scores of options available through the Chrysler Corporation and aftermarket sources for car audio equipment. Choose the stereo that fits your budget and your musical preference, keeping in mind the other components you may have as part of your stereo system. After selecting your stereo, bypass the offer to install the unit by an audio professional. With the proper adapters you can install your new stereo in your Dodge Neon.

Things You'll Need

  • 10 mm wrench
  • 10 mm socket and drive
  • Wiring harness adapter
  • Faceplate adapter
  • Lift the hood of the Neon and disconnect the negative battery cable from the negative battery post. Use a wrench to loosen the cable's clamp until you are able to remove the cable from the battery altogether.

  • Grab the dash panel that surrounds the stereo and climate-control knobs at the bottom corners and pull it away from the dashboard. The panel will release from the dashboard. Set the panel aside until reinstallation.

  • Remove the two 10 mm bolts on either side of the stereo mounting bracket with the 10 mm socket and drive.

  • Slide the Neon's factory-installed stereo from the stereo mounting dock. Disconnect the wire binders connected to the outlets on the rear panel of the stock deck. Pull the black antenna cable from the back of the factory stereo.

  • Connect the stereo wiring to a wiring harness adapter. The adapter leads will be color-coded to show where the appropriate connections to the Neon's stereo wiring should be made.

  • Place the faceplate adapter into the vacant stereo mounting dock in the Dodge Neon's dashboard. Screw in the two 10 mm bolts on either side of the adapter.

  • Connect the wiring harness adapter leads to the outlets on the rear panel of the new stereo. Plug the antenna cable into the outlet labeled "FM ANT" on the rear panel of the aftermarket stereo.

  • Slide the new stereo into the faceplate adapter until it snaps into place.

  • Replace the dash panel around the stereo mount and the climate controls. Press firmly around the perimeter of the panel to snap it into place.

  • Replace the negative battery cable clamp onto the negative battery lead. Tighten the cable's clamp to the Neon's battery with the wrench. Close the Dodge Neon's hood.
