Ford Taurus Radio Removal

Ford Taurus owners who wish to repair their vehicle's radio, replace their stereo or add audio components will first need to remove their radio. While other vehicles have complex procedures for stereo removal, Ford uses a simple design that makes the radio removal throughout their line of cars, trucks and SUVs, a relatively easy task. You can have a car audio professional perform the removal at a price, or you can do it yourself.

Safety

  • Before removing the Ford Taurus' radio, you must first disconnect the negative battery cable. Use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the bolt holding the cable's clamp around the battery's negative lead post. Pull the clamp from the lead and lay it away from the lead until your stereo work is completed.

To reconnect the negative battery cable, place the cable's clamp around the negative lead. Screw the clamp's bolt to tighten the clamp around the post. The clamp needs to be tightened only to the point where it cannot be moved around the lead by hand.

Removing Radio

  • On the face of the Ford Taurus radio, stacked vertically, are two holes. Insert the Ford DIN removal tools into the holes. Pull the DIN tools outward to engage the gripping mechanism. Pull the DIN removal tools with equal force to pull the radio straight from the stereo dock. Pull the stereo out far enough to access the wiring connections in the back of the unit.

Disconnecting Radio

  • All of the components related to the Taurus' stereo are connected to the rear of the radio. There are connections for the antenna, the power supply, the speakers and the amplifier. There may also be other components connected, such as an iPod or Mp3 player adapter, an equalizer, a multi-disc player or a satellite radio receiver. Grab each of the wire groups by the plastic wire binders and pull them from their outlets on the radio.

Once the wire groups have been disconnected, the Ford radio is completely detached from the vehicle.
