How to Replace Factory Speakers in a Honda Accord

Whether your Honda Accord is an older model or a newer one, it's good to know how to replace the factory speakers. Chances are that at some point they will blow out, stop functioning as well as when you purchased them, or just flat out stop working. Anyone with a minimal amount of mechanical knowledge can easily replace car speakers. Just remember to apply truly gentle pressure; that way you won't break anything.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdrivers (Phillips head and flathead)
  • Speakers and wiring harnesses
  • Crescent wrench

Instructions

  • Find the screws you need to take out of the interior door panels. Your front speakers sit behind them. The Accord has one screw beneath each door handle (the one you use to open the door and the one you use to pull it closed). Find the plastic cap that sits behind the first handle and in the indentation of the second handle. Pry the cap out of each to reveal the screws. Then take the screws out with your Phillips head screwdriver.

  • Sit in the driver's seat and look for a third plastic cap at the top right of the door directly below the base for the rear view mirror. Pry this one off with the flathead screwdriver and remove the screw underneath it. The door panel should now be loose.

  • Wedge the head of your flathead screwdriver between the plastic panel's edge and the painted metal of the car door. Move it around the perimeter to pop out all of the plastic clips that attach this panel to the door.

  • Check to make sure you've gotten each and every clip disconnected. Then pull the door panel toward you about 4 inches. Look inside the door and pull out any plugs that connect the power options, such as the windows, power locks or an electronic mirror. Then you can pull the panel up to remove it completely from the car.

  • Look at your factory speaker. You will see that it has three screws attaching it to the door. Take out these screws and pull the speaker toward you, again about 4 inches. Then unplug it from the wiring harness. (It will be connected via two wires.) Now remove it totally. Plug your new speaker's harness into the wiring harness and secure it with screws. Reassemble your car door and repeat these steps for the other front door.

  • Pull up the carpeting behind your front seats to uncover the rear speakers. Look for a bolt 3 inches to the right of the center console. Remove it with your wrench to begin the process. Then pull up the floor panels by popping out clips like you did in step 3. Then unscrew and unplug the speakers and put the new ones in the same spots. Don't forget to screw them in tightly before you put the carpeting back.
