How to Install a Stereo in a Nissan Pathfinder

The rugged and powerful Nissan Pathfinder has been the choice for people who want off-road capability with street comfort. If you wish to upgrade the stereo to improve the Nissan sound or just replace an outdated system, the Pathfinder is a great do-it-yourself car. Replacing the stereo requires basic knowledge and about an hour of your time. Here's how to switch the stereo in model years 1995 through 1997.

Things You'll Need

  • Philips screwdriver
  • Wiring harness adaptor
  • Open the hood and unhook the negative wire from the battery. Ensure the wire is secured to keep it from touching any metal parts or the battery terminal.

  • Locate the trim securing screws at the top of the center console. Pull the center console trim away from the dash of the Nissan Pathfinder carefully until the bottom clip unsnaps.

  • Remove the metal braces on each side of the Pathfinder stereo and take them out. Pull the radio and lower pocket free, as one piece.

  • Disconnect the wires from the back of the head unit and pull the assembly free. Remove the screws at the side of the pocket brackets and pull out the radio.

  • Set the new stereo into the brackets and secure it in place. Connect the wiring harness adaptor to the original harness. Snap the adaptor into the back of the new stereo and slide the pocket brackets into the dash.

  • Connect the negative cable on the battery and turn the radio on.

  • Test the system to ensure all of the speakers are working and the controls operate correctly. Replace the securing screws and trim.
