How to Install a Smoke Switch

A smoke switch is an upgrade feature that you can add to your car if you want the effect of billowing smoke when you punch down on the accelerator. The process of adding the switch varies widely by make and model. The steps in this article apply to an Edge Comp diesel.

  • Use a voltmeter to check that the +5 volt side of your engine's connector is still functional. The connector runs from your battery to your engine. When you take it apart, you should see three slots that hold the leads from the battery. The +5 volt side is usually on the left. Of the three leads (+5 volt, signal and ground), you'll need the signal one next.

  • Cut the spring lead (one of the three leads heading from the connector to your engine) and add an SPST toggle switch to that line. This is the smoke switch.

  • Run the engine normally. The smoke switch will have the computer show a status of 100% boost, while the MAP sensor will be as truthful as it can. The MAP sensor monitors the manifold absolute pressure, using the data to calculate air density and mass flow. The smoke switch distorts the data. When the switch is on, your vehicle will operate normally. When the switch is off, the engine will give smoke when you hit the throttle.
