How to Make a Screamer Pipe

A screamer pipe is a straight pipe connected to the wastegate of a turbo charger in a vehicle for enhanced performance and sound. Installing a screamer pipe requires a moderate understanding of auto mechanics and turbo chargers. It also requires the installer to have some welding experience. The project should take less than half an hour for an expert. The screamer pipe itself is inexpensive.

Things You'll Need

  • 12-in fitted straight pipe
  • Welding kit
  • Locate the turbo in the vehicle.

  • Locate the wastegate on the turbo. This will be in a different place on different model turbos, but it should be between 1.5 and 3 inches in diameter, depending on the size of the turbo.

  • Measure the diameter of the wastegate.

  • Purchase a 12-inch steel pipe that fits the wastegate's diameter.

  • Place the steel pipe into the opening of the wastegate. Push the pipe down until it will go no farther, approximately 1.5 inches. Do not force the pipe; it should slide easily. The pipe should perfectly fit the wastegate.

  • Weld the pipe into place on the wastegate.

  • Turn the car on and test the screamer pipe.
