The diesel particulate filter is a device installed on modern diesel engines, such as the Ford Powerstroke. It removes soot from the exhaust gas, reducing pollution levels and eliminating the black exhaust typical of diesel vehicles. A vehicle owner intending to remove the DPF system to gain a bit more power and efficiency should keep in mind that installing a DPF delete kit may void the vehicle's warranty and violate state and federal pollution emission standards.
Park your Powerstroke on level ground. Crawl underneath and orient yourself with the DPF. It will be the large canister underneath the truck with heat shields and sensors connected at the front and back. Follow the exhaust headers underneath the car. The DPF will start about a foot behind the transfer case.
Spray the bolts that connect the DPF to the exhaust and along the oxygen sensors installed in the DPF with penetrating lubricant.
Remove the single bolt on the clamp at the rear of the DPF
Unbolt the six bolts that secure the DPF to the front of the exhaust using a 17mm socket. The very top bolt will hold a bracket for the pressure sensor. It will be double bolted, so remove the first bolt and remove the pressure sensor bracket, then remove the second bolt that secures the DPF to the exhaust.
Disconnect the exhaust gas temperature sensors that are located at either end of the DPF by unplugging them at the wiring harness that is located near the exhaust hangers.
Spray penetrating lubricant on the rubber hangers that hold the DPF in place. Use a large flathead screwdriver to pull the DPF off the rubber hanger. The DPF will sag now that it is not connected. Pull it off the rear exhaust system and set it aside. Depending on your delete kit, you may re-use the gasket at the front of the DPF filter with the new kit.
Use a 13mm wrench to remove the exhaust gas temperature sensor that is installed at the rearward section of the DPF. Install the EGT sensor into the new DPF delete pipe, then place the DPF delete pipe into the stock location by inserting the rear of the delete pipe into the exhaust, then lining up the front and inserting the bolts. Include the sensor bracket at the top with the double nut.
