How to Darken Glass

Darkening glass, also known as tinting, can be effective at keeping out harmful UV radiation from the sun. Tint is often applied to cars, but can also be used at home or in the office to keep your environment cool, reduce air conditioning costs, protect the environment by reducing electrical bills and protect carpet and furniture from discoloration. Tinting a home or office window requires lighter tint than in cars because thermal fracture could occur on large tinted areas if they are too dark.

Things You'll Need

  • Glass tint
  • Spray bottle
  • Soap solution
  • Squeegee
  • Cloth
  • Clean the glass and then dry it. Cut the tint to the size of the area you want to darken.

  • Push the tint onto the glass with the clear plastic part facing you. Make sure there are no bubbles by running a smooth edge along the glass.

  • Peel back the plastic liner gently and smoothly. As you are doing this, spray the area that you just peeled with a spray bottle filled with soap solution.

  • Peel the tint off the glass and then flip it so that the wet part is facing the glass. Make sure the tint only touches the surface of the glass.

  • Smooth out the tint with a squeegee. The water will escape from the sides of the tint. Ensure there are no bubble in the tint and then dry the area with a clean cloth.
