Installation Instructions for a Reese Hitch

Reese has been a leading manufacturer of quality towing hitches since the early 1950's, specializing in units that can be bolted on to the back of your vehicle. Their trailer hitches come equipped with the ability to use interchangeable draw bars, for towing various types of vehicles. Once the hitches square tube design has been properly hooked up to the back of your car, you will be able to ensure that your automobile will be towed safety while being transferred to its new destination.

Things You'll Need

  • Felt-tip pen
  • Socket wrench set
  • Torque wrench
  • 1/2 inch drill bit
  • Power drill
  • Ratchet wrench
  • Stand at the rear of your vehicle and situate the hitch's flanges over your vehicle's holes that come pre-drilled. If the flanges match all of the holes on your car's frame, move onto step four. You won't need to make additional holes at this time.

  • Mark the frame of your vehicle, underneath the flanges that do not have pre-drilled holes that match up, while holding the Resse hitch in position. Remove the hitch from the frame when you've made the appropriate marks.

  • Drill holes through the marks made with the pen, using the drill and a 1/2 inch bit. Make sure to drill them as vertically as possible, so that the bolts that hold the hitch in place will be straight and free from undesired strain that can come from towing the weight of your car.

  • Situate the hitch's mounting flanges over the holes that you have drilled, as well as the one's that came pre-drilled on the frame of your vehicle, then place the bolts with washers into each of the holes. Slide the lock washers over the bolt's threads, then tighten the bolt's nuts with your hands.

  • Get your socket and torque wrenches and use them to tighten each of the nuts on the hitch. Turn the wrenches to the right to set the 1/2 inch-sized bolts to 75 ft. lbs., and then the 5/8 inch bolts to 100 ft lbs., until they are completely secure.
