How to Install a 3.5 Inch Muffler Silencer

A 3.5-inch muffler silencer fits on the end of a muffler in order to enhance the silencing function of the muffler. The silencer reduces the size of the output hole of the muffler, thereby reducing the noise. You can buy a muffler silencer at most auto stores or through online vendors. Expect the installation process to take less than 15 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Power drill
  • Muffler silencer installation kit
  • Screwdriver
  • Soap
  • Water
  • Paper towels
  • Marker
  • Clean the tip of your muffler with soap, water and paper towels.

  • Check whether the muffler tip features small holes to install a muffler silencer. If there are, continue to the next step. Otherwise, place the silencer inside the muffler tip. Mark the holes in the silencer on the muffler tip with your marker. Remove the silencer. Insert the drill-bit provided in the muffler silencer kit on your power drill. Drill holes in the muffler tip where you placed the marker points.

  • Place the muffler silencer inside the muffler tip. Line up the holes on the muffler tip with the holes of the 3.5-inch muffler silencer. Insert the bolts provided in the muffler silencer kit into the holes. Tighten them in place with the screwdriver.

  • Turn on your vehicle. Check that the muffler silencer does not rattle. If it does, tighten the mounting bolts on the muffler tip further.
