How to Change the Shifter in a Honda Civic

Changing the gear shifter is an inexpensive way to personalize the appearance of your Honda Civic without performing any major mechanical upgrades or bodywork. You can easily remove the factory shift knob from your shifter and install a new custom shifter. Doing so requires no special tools and only a few minutes of your time. Most custom shift knobs are universal and fit any make and model of vehicle without any significant alteration. Even so, you will want to check the specifications before you purchase a new shifter.

Things You'll Need

  • Replacement shifter
  • Grasp the silver ring at the base of the shift knob with your thumb on the left side and forefinger on the right side.

  • Press your thumb and forefinger together and slide the silver ring down. The silver ring attaches to the shift boot.

  • Grasp the shift knob firmly with your hand and screw it counterclockwise until you can pull it off the shift lever.

  • Insert the new shift knob onto the shift lever. Follow the exact instructions on your new shift knob to install it properly. Note that most shift knobs screw on or attach to the shift lever using a hex screw.

  • Grasp the silver ring and slide it up until it sits below the shift knob.
