How to Add HP to Ranger 2.3

The Ford Ranger 2.3 offers as standard, 207 horsepower from a four-cylinder engine and comes with manual or automatic transmission. The 2.3 liter engine does not fit into the high performance category but it is easily modified to increase its performance.

Things You'll Need

  • Performance fuel injection system
  • Turbo muffler
  • Upgraded air filter
  • High performance engine oil
  • Upgrade the factory fuel injection system by installing one designed for high performance. Check your Ford dealer for one that is compatible with the Ranger.

  • Replace the standard muffler with a turbo muffler which will help the engine to breathe more easily. The better the air flow both in and out of the engine, the more efficiently it will perform.

  • Replace the standard air filter with one that allows more air to flow through the engine. The air filter should be changed anyway about once a year or whenever it shows sign of being dirty, as this will affect the way the engine runs. A new air filter is white or off-white and a dirty one is clearly darker.

  • Use an engine oil designed to help the engine perform better. Keeping the engine well-lubricated will enhance its performance.
