How to Program a 2000 Nissan Maxima Key

Many modern vehicles equipped with electronic locks come with accompanying electronic remotes that allow you to unlock and lock the doors of your vehicle from a distance. If you lost your original remote or it stopped working, or even if you want a second or third remote for your 2000 Nissan Maxima, you can purchase it from various online retailers. Once purchased, you must program the new remote to work with your specific Nissan Maxima.

  • Close all passenger doors on the Nissan Maxima. Sit in the driver's seat with the ignition key and keyless remotes. Close the driver's door.

  • Lock the doors using the power lock switch on the driver's side.

  • Place the key in the ignition and remove it completely six times in a row to enter "Programming Mode." The hazard lights will flash to confirm "Programming Mode." Note that you must perform this within 10 seconds.

  • Place the key in the ignition and turn the ignition to "ACC."

  • Press one of the buttons on the keyless entry remote to program it. The hazard lights will flash to confirm that you programmed the remote. Note that you must perform this within 5 seconds of the previous step.

  • Unlock and re-lock the doors using the power lock switch on the driver's side and press one of the buttons on the next keyless entry remote that you want to program. Only complete this step if you want to program additional keyless entry remotes, otherwise skip this step.

  • Turn the ignition to "OFF" and remove the key. Unlock the door with the power lock switch on the driver's side and get out of the vehicle. Shut the door and test all programmed keyless entry remotes to verify they work.
