How to Program a Toyota Avalon Smart Key

The Toyota Avalon has a number of options that offer various security and convenience measures. One of these, the ability to program transponder keys, allows you to control your engine starter with a simple ignition key. Programming of the transponder key, also known as a chip key or smart key, can be completed with no professional experience in just a few minutes from within your car.

  • Close all of the doors and windows on your car and lock and unlock the driver's side door with your smart key.

  • Enter your car with one smart key at a time. Be sure to leave the other keys outside of the vehicle a couple of feet away.

  • Insert your first key into the ignition without turning it and wait for the security light to turn on. Leave the key there for five seconds after the light turns on and remove it from the ignition.

  • Repeat the previous step with your other two keys and wait 30 seconds after removing the third key before you open the driver's door to confirm the programming sequence.
