How to Hook Up an Underglow

Underglow lamps create a diffused bright glowing light under your car body. Underglow lamps may be made of neon lamps or LED. LED lamps can be multicolored and provide more effects such as fade, strobe, etc. It is fairly straightforward to install an underglow system by following the instructions in an assembly kit. The glow lamps are usually centered along the sides of the vehicle.

Things You'll Need

  • Underglow kit
  • Jack
  • Pencil
  • Center punch
  • Silicon seal
  • Electric drill
  • Soldering gun
  • Identify the positions where the underglow lamps will be fixed. Make sure the positions are away from fuel lines and areas of extreme heat.

  • Disconnect the car's battery. Loosen one of the terminal's connections and remove the cable.

  • Raise the vehicle using a jack. Hold the underglow assembly in the desired position. The lamps should be placed high enough on the chassis that they are not visible outside. Mark the screw positions of the assembly bracket on the chassis with a pencil.

  • Make holes in the chassis in the marked places with the center punch. Coat with silicon seal to prevent rusting.

  • Pass screws through the underglow assembly bracket. Align them with the holes drilled in the chassis. Tighten and fix the screws in place using the electric drill.

  • Mount the distribution block in the engine compartment. Choose a location where it won't get too heated up and keep it away from moving parts.

  • Bring the wires from the underglow assembly into the engine compartment. Fix them to the distribution block's output.

  • Place the underglow assembly's control panel inside the vehicle. Pass the ribbon wire into the engine compartment and connect to the distribution block.

  • Connect the power wire from the control panel to the car battery's positive terminal. Connect the ground wire from the control panel to the chassis or a ground wire.

  • Lower the vehicle and connect the battery.
