How to Wire a CB in a Jeep Wrangler

To install a CB radio in your Jeep Wrangler, you will need to purchase an antenna that is adjustable up to 10 feet. The reason for this is that all antennas and cable have impedance or a resistance to the movement of electrical current. CB radios have 40 channels, and to have the correct impedance for all channels you need an antenna about 39 feet in length. A compromise is definitely in order. A 10-foot antenna is the best compromise with the least amount of standing wave.

Things You'll Need

  • Drill
  • Drill bits
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Set of wrenches
  • Box of assorted wire terminal connectors
  • Wire crimper
  • Hold the CB mounting bracket up to the spot where it will be mounted, mark the holes and drill them out. Insert the two bolts supplied with the CB radio through the bracket and the holes. Install the nuts and tighten them with a wrench.

  • Mount the CB radio into the bracket with the parts supplied. Usually there are two thumbscrews that secure the radio to the bracket. Read the radio installation instructions if a different device is supplied for your particular brand of radio.

  • Read the instructions supplied with the antenna. There are several different adapters supplied with the antenna kit for different vehicles. Drill the holes in the location specified in the kit's instructions, insert the bolts supplied then tighten them with the wrench.

  • Install the antenna cable through the side of the Jeep’s rear seat and under the carpet up to the radio. It may be necessary to remove the kick plate on the door sill to lift the carpet. If this is necessary, use the Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screws so that the carpet can be lifted.

  • Thread the antenna cable into the back of the CB radio by pushing the plug in and turning the threaded ring clockwise. Connect the black wire in the back of the radio to a good ground. Most Jeeps have a metal dash so install a post-type terminal connector on the end of the black wire, crimp it with wire crimpers, and place it under a bracket screw between the radio bracket and the dash then retighten the screw.

  • Connect the red wire, which is the power wire, to the male blade terminal which is a single flat post next to the radio fuse in the fuse box under the driver’s side dash. Use a female spade terminal made to slide down on the male blade terminal on the end of the wire and crimp it with the wire crimpers. Attach the mike to the CB. There is a plug on the front left side of the radio. Push the mike plug in and rotate the lock ring clockwise.
