How to Hook Up a TV to Car Speakers

When traveling with children it is usually a chore to keep them entertained (especially if on a long road trip). Many newer vehicles have a built in monitor and DVD player, but if you do not have the luxury of owning such a new vehicle, do not fret--it is still possible to hook up a television to your car's stereo system. You just just a stereo that has an auxiliary port installed.

Things You'll Need

  • Stereo with Aux port
  • 3.5mm to RCA female adapter
  • Television
  • Plug the red and white RCA stereo cables end of the 3.5mm to RCA cable adapter into the red and white "Audio Out" ports on the television. You probably want to use a portable television with batteries. If not, you must use a DC to AC converter with the cigarette lighter, then plug the television into the AC power port. This turns the cigarette lighter into an electrical outlet.

  • Plug the 3.5mm cable into the Aux port on the car stereo system. The 3.5mm to RCA adapter cable is a converter cable. The RCA cables are the red and white audio connections typically found on television and DVD player connections. The 3.5mm cable connection is the audio jack connection found on MP3 and CD players. All Aux ports found on car stereo CD players are 3.5mm in size.

  • Power on the car stereo system and turn it to "Aux." Once you turn on the television, all of the audio will be played through the car's speaker system.
