Suicide Door Installation

"Suicide doors" open in the reverse direction from conventional car doors and add a unique look to a custom job. They also make it easier for passengers to exit the vehicle. Instead of the hinges attaching to the front of the car, they open to the back. This increases the odds that a door opened into traffic will shut back on you rather than to fly away, hence the name. It is viable to self-install suicide car doors. This type of door is also referred to as a rear-hinged or coach door.

Wiring

  • Wiring to power locks, windows, and mirrors will need to be extended long enough to run along the car frame to the location of the new hinges.

Hinges

  • Purchase a suicide car door hinge kit or visit a junk yard. Make sure the hinges chosen were either designed for your vehicle or are at least large enough to support the weight of the door. Failure to do so will lead to sagging and the door will not shut properly. Leave the original hinges in place while you measure and mark the location of the new hinges. You will need a welder to cut and make the necessary adjustments to ensure a good fit, such as attaching the hinges and cutting hinge pockets.

Other Items

  • Consider how the door will latch close. Suicide hinge kits often include such items as door and jamb pockets and latches and strikers, including the necessary plates. Look at your existing door mechanism and determine the best way to attach a Bear Claw latch to the door handles. Otherwise you will not be able to open and close the doors. Another option is to actually move door handles to make it more convenient.

Tips & Hints

  • Remove the window and rubber seals from the door before beginning.

If the front and back door will both be hinged in the center of the car, Make sure there is enough clearance for both doors to open without damaging each other.

Removing the vehicle fenders may make it easier to cut pockets and do necessary welding.

Legality

  • Before you install suicide doors, check with local authorities to ensure they are legal in your area.
