There are several ways to increase horsepower on your Chevrolet Silverado, and they start with getting air into or out of the engine faster. Installing a custom air intake is usually the first modification most people make, but an aftermarket air intake can be costly. One cheap fix to get a little more power is to remove the air silencer. The factory installs these intake boxes to dampen the sound of air rushing into the engine. But if you remove that box and cap off the port, you can gain horsepower on the cheap.
Open the hood and locate the air silencer on top of the engine. It's a black box with the word "Vortec" embossed on it.
Unscrew the hose clamp that connects the air silencer box to the air intake tube, using the flat-head screwdriver. Pull the box off the back of the intake.
Place the rubber plumbing cap onto the hole left by the air silencer on the air intake tube. Without this cap, unfiltered air would go into the throttle body, which could suck in a moth or large particle and cause a problem with your engine.
Place the hose clamp around the plumbing cap, and tighten it down using the flat-head screwdriver.
