How to Make a Motorcycle Throttle Lock

Many touring motorcycles now come standard with an electronic cruise control, also known as throttle lock. This cruise control takes strain off wrists and hands during extended highway rides by locking the motorcycle into a specified speed. Reduce wrist strain on your older motorcycle with a do-it-yourself throttle lock.

Things You'll Need

  • Electrical tape
  • Small shelf mounts
  • Aluminum strap
  • Allen head bolt
  • Self-locking nut
  • Rubber O-rings
  • Cut a piece of perforated strap aluminum to 3 to 4 inches long, using bolt cutters of metal shears. Be sure the holes will accommodate a small bolt. If not, the hole closest to one end may be drilled out.

  • Attach the perforated aluminum strip to a small 90-degree shelving mount. Use rubber O-rings and a self-locking nut to assure freedom of movement from the perforated strip.

  • Wrap the other end of the perforated aluminum strip with electrical tape until it will "stick" between the throttle grip and throttle body.

  • Attach the small shelving mount to the throttle side mirror by removing the mirror and bolting it back down with the shelving mount between the mount and mirror.

  • Get your motorcycle to a comfortable speed and lodge the aluminum strip between the throttle grip and throttle body. This will hold the throttle at a comfortable opening until you manually disengage the throttle lock.
