How to Install a Fuse for the Toggle Switch

When wiring a switch, the safest thing to do is to wire a fuse in line with the power. Without it, if you have a short, you could also have a fire. Practice safety at all time, and learn how to install a fuse for a toggle switch the right way by following these suggestions.

Things You'll Need

  • Wire cutters
  • Wire crimpers
  • Inline fuse
  • Toggle switch
  • Wire
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Butt connectors
  • Ring terminals
  • 12-volt test light
  • Run a wire from the object you want to turn on to the switch.

  • Strip the last 1/4-inch of the wire to expose the bare wire underneath with the wire strippers.

  • Crimp the ring terminal onto the end of the bare wire using the wire crimpers.

  • Screw the ring terminal into the top post of the toggle switch using the Phillips-head screwdriver. This terminal should be obvious, as the remaining one is in the middle of the switch.

  • Find a 12-volt power source using the test light. Crimp one end of the inline fuse to the power source, using the wire crimpers, but make sure the fuse is out of the holder first.

  • Run another wire to the other end of the fused wire, and connect it to the middle pole of the switch using the same method as you did with the other post.

  • Install the fuse. The switch is now ready to use.
