About Dump Bed Kits

The idea of converting a pick-up truck into a miniature dump truck is, in itself, such a simple yet obvious idea that one has to wonder why it is not offered as a standard option from the major truck dealers. As an aftermarket product, the investment in money, time and energy seems like such a benefit especially if you have ever unloaded anything other than furniture (dirt, rocks or your mother-in-law) by hand that it is simply a "no-brainer."

Types

  • As with most consumer items, Dump Bed Kit options are varied to fit most needs, likes and budgets. The most popular trend in Dump Bed Kits is the "Hydraulic Lift." Combined with installing the hydraulic cylinder lift at the front end of the bed and a hinge system at the back, you can operate your pick-up much like its much larger cousin, the enormous 18 wheel dump truck.

Benefits

  • The benefits of adding a Dump Bed Kit to your pick-up are simple. As a time saver, no more having to shovel dirt, mulch or rocks just press a button and dump the cargo. Physically, by not having to shovel hundreds of pounds of the previously mentioned garbage could mean using less Ben-Gay on those nagging back aches. With gas prices being what they are, fewer trips to unload at the dump will save you money.

Manufacturers

  • There are several manufactures of the Dump Bed Kits, including Pierce Sales, Stealth Dump Trucks and Hefty Products, to name a few. These are reputable companies and they offer sales, installation, service and support. Each has a comprehensive web site with extensive details as to their sales, services and costs (for kits and shipping). Sizes are available for most makes, models and years of trucks going back to the 1970's.

Costs

  • The costs for the kits can vary depending on the size of your truck, the type and strength of the lift you are looking for, shipping and, of course, the manufacturer. Prices were found to range from $1175.99 for a "two ton kit" that would fit a Chevy, Dodge of Ford (of various years) at Pierce to $3600 for 2.5 ton "03 and up Dodge at Stealth. Be sure to check with the manufacturer for the specific kit you will need for your truck.

Installation

  • All of the manufacturers mentioned claim you can install these kits yourself. Some even say it can be done with little or no welding. While they all provide instructions on how you go about completing the installation, it would be advisable to check the various sites for photos on what the finished project should look like to avoid unnecessary confusion or delay. The Pierce site says only "simple tools" are needed for their "bolt-together kit." Good Luck and happy dumping!
