How to Install Decals on Cars

A well-chosen car decal adds a touch of personal flair to your car. Decals come in all shapes and sizes, but their application follows the same preparatory steps and techniques. Following a few simple steps can help ease the application process and ensure that the end result looks professional.

Things You'll Need

  • Towel
  • Water
  • Tape measure
  • Electrical tape
  • Safety pin
  • Moisten a towel with water and clean the future location of your decal, as well as the surrounding area, ensuring that no dust particles or contaminates end up between the decal and your car. Abstain from using chemical-based cleaners, because they may have adverse effects on the application of your decal.

  • Establish the general area where you wish to apply your decal. Use a tape measure for exact measurements, or align the decal with a centered item, such as a tail light or hood ornament. Mark off the future location of your decal with electrical tape; a bright color that contrasts your car's finish is the most favorable, but any color will suffice. Do not use scotch tape, because its removal can prove difficult, while a duct tape's stickiness can harm your car's finish.

  • Apply the decal to your car, using your electrical tape markers as your guide; make sure to slowly apply the decal, working from one end to another, using a towel. If any small bubbles are formed, gently pull the decal back and use your finger to roll it back onto the car.

  • Use the tip of your thumb to work out any bubbles in your car's decal. If you are unable to work them out, do not fret, since the sun's heat will usually work the air out of these bubbles. If you absolutely must pop the bubble immediately, or if the sun does not work the air out of it, use a safety pin to place a small hole in the bubble's center.
