How to Hook Up Electrical Wires for KC Lights

KC HiLites has been building off-road lighting since 1970. The company was started by Pete Brown, who was looking for a way to improve lighting for his own truck. Since then the company has grown to be one of the largest in the off-road lighting industry. Lights for this type of environment need to be extremely rugged and built to withstand vibration and weather. Installing the lighting kit requires connecting to the vehicle's power source.

Things You'll Need

  • KC HiLites wiring kit
  • Wire cutters
  • Wire strippers
  • Pliers
  • Electrical tape
  • Cable ties
  • Loosen one full turn of the mounting bolt for the light. Slide the black wire coming out of the light under the bolt and tighten it down.

  • Connect the red wire coming out of the light with the 14-gauge wire supplied in the wiring kit. This process is completed by inserting both wires in the wire splice connector's grooves and closing the gate.

  • Run the 14-gauge wire to the location you mounted the switch. Cut with wire cutters. Strip 3/8 inches of insulation off the end of the wire with wire strippers. Insert the slide-on terminal on the end and compress with pliers.

  • Slide the connector onto the middle terminal on the switch marked "LOAD."

  • Find a location to ground the switch to that is close by. A typical spot is under any screw or bolt fastened to the metal body. Measure and cut a section of wire to go between these two points.

  • Strip 3/8 inches of insulation off both ends of the wire. Install a ring terminal on one end and a slide-on terminal on the other end. Connect the one end of the wire to the switch's terminal marked "EARTH."

  • Loosen the grounding screw and slide the other end of the wire underneath. Tighten down the grounding screw.

  • Strip 3/8 inches of insulation off the 14-gauge wire. Install a slide-on terminal on the end. Connect this terminal to the switch tab marked "SUPPLY."

  • Run the wire to the vehicle's battery. Cut and strip to length. Connect this wire to the in-line fuse holder by inserting both wires in the groove and closing the gate.

  • Loosen the positive terminal on the vehicle's battery and slide the wire from the fuse holder underneath. Tighten the terminal down.

  • Wrap all of the connections in electrical tape. Secure the loose wires with cable ties.
