How to Install a Sliding Truck Rear Window

Sliding rear windows are a welcome option for pickup owners who want a little extra fresh air, or easy access to the bed of their truck. Many pickups, however, do not come factory-equipped with a sliding rear window, or may have a broken slider. The rear glass can be easily replaced, however, with a new rear slider assembly.

Things You'll Need

  • Rear sliding window
  • Box cutter
  • 10' of 1/4" diameter woven rope
  • Leather gloves
  • Remove the gasket surrounding the old rear window by carefully cutting it between the window frame and glass, both inside and outside of the cab. Then gently apply pressure from the inside of the cab to push the window out of the window frame. Position someone in the bed of the pickup to catch and remove the old window as it is pushed out.

  • Peel any remaining pieces of gasket out of the window frame so you are left with a clean, metal frame to insert the new window into. Use a clean rag to wipe any debris or dirt out of window frame.

  • Lay a piece of 1/4-inch diameter woven rope inside of the gasket surrounding the new sliding rear window. Wrap the rope all the way around the window, tucked inside of the sealing gasket, with enough left over to create a six-inch long tail at both ends of the rope.

  • Set the new sliding window assembly into the window frame from the outside. Have a partner hold the window in place and move to the interior of the vehicle. Grab the rope tail hanging from the window's gasket assembly and begin to gently pull the rope toward you from inside the vehicle. Move around the window as the rope pulls the lip of the gasket over the interior side of the window frame and secures the glass.

  • Once the rope is completely removed from the gasket, check to ensure that the gasket has sealed on both the interior and exterior lip of the window sill.
