How to Replace a HID Headlight

HID headlight bulbs are generally no more difficult to replace than any other auto light bulb. They are more expensive than older bulbs, and must not be handled directly on the glass portion lest fingerprints leave oil behind and mar the glass. Part of what makes HID lights more expensive than older halogen lights are the other components of an HID light kit, i.e., the ballast. But note that replacing the bulb is the same as bulb replacement has always been, and HID bulbs generally last years longer than other bulbs.

Things You'll Need

  • Replacement HID light bulb(s)
  • Open the hood of the vehicle. Remove the electrical connector from the HID ballast. This ensures no electrical current gets to the bulb.

  • Remove the retaining clip or spring. On most cars, the clip is removed by pulling up on it.

  • Turn the collar of the HID bulb approximately 1/8 turn counterclockwise. Pull the bulb out of the housing.

  • Insert the new HID headlight bulb, and turn the bulb slightly clockwise. Installation is the reverse direction of headlight removal.

    .

  • Slide the retaining clip back on the HID bulb, and reattach the wire connector to the ballast.
