How to Install Projector Headlights on the F-150

Properly functioning headlights are important for driving at night. The next generation of headlight is called a projection headlight. The bulbs used are L.E.D. and the lenses on the headlight focus the light in a more precise forward pattern than traditional headlights. Projector headlight kits can be found online starting around $150 for only the headlight housing and $400 for complete installation kits (2010 pricing).

Things You'll Need

  • Ratchet set
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Electrical tape
  • Shop rag
  • Open the hood of the F150 and disconnect the negative terminal of the battery using a socket and ratchet. Most newer F150s use a 9/16 inch terminal bolt to fasten the electrical cables to the battery.

  • Remove the splash guard located on the front support beam. There are 6 rubber Phillips-head pins that hold the splash guard in place. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the pins.

  • There are also three 10mm bolts that need to be removed from each headlight. These three bolts secure the headlight housing to the body of the vehicle. On the top side of each headlight housing there is also a plastic locking clip that also secures the headlight to the body. Use a flat-head screwdriver and gently pry the tab loose.

  • Remove each factory headlight housing from the vehicle. Look at the backside of each housing and use your hand to disconnect the electrical terminals from the back of the housing.

  • Place the projector headlight assembly next to the open headlight slot so that electrical connections can be established. The projector headlight has an additional row of lights that are not present on the factory headlight unit. These extra lights need to have the power wire spliced into the factory wiring harness. Match up the wires black to black and white to white. Remove a small section of the protective rubber coating to expose the metal wiring on the wiring harness. Twist the wires from the headlight into the wiring harness. Wrap the connection with electrical tape or a similar material to protect the joint.

  • Slide the bulbs into the connectors and insert them into the new headlight housing. Insert the headlight housing into position on the F150. Be sure that the plastic locking tab is firmly in position and locks into place. Install the three 10mm bolts through the new headlight housing so that it is firmly attached to the body.

  • Repeat steps 5 and 6 on the other headlight assembly.

  • Reinstall the splash guard using the original 6 plastic screws and the Phillips-head screwdriver. Make adjustments to the projection of the headlights if necessary.
