How to Remove a Mustang Spoiler

Many Ford Mustangs are equipped with rear spoilers. These spoilers are not molded into the rear deck; they are bolted on. If your Mustang's spoiler is damaged or faded, you may want to remove it to repair it or perhaps replace it with a new one. Removing the Mustang's spoiler is not difficult or dangerous, as long as the proper precautions are taken. When the spoiler is installed, holes are drilled into your deck lid. If you plan on leaving the spoiler off for an extended period of time, please see the Tips section before beginning.

Things You'll Need

  • Gloves
  • Socket wrench
  • Assistant (recommended)
  • Turn your engine off and set the parking brake. Gather the required tools and supplies.

  • Open the trunk fully and examine the underside of the deck lid. Some models have a deck lid liner that requires removing; others will be bare, with the nuts and bolts visible.
If the underside of the deck lid has a liner, pull it back to expose the bare metal. There may be a push-pin clip or two in the corner; remove them to pull back the liner.

  • Locate the spoiler mounting bolts or nuts. There are usually four bolts (two on each side). Remove the caps from the bolts, if necessary, then remove the rear bolts (the ones closest to the rear of the deck lid).

  • Lower the trunk halfway, and then support the spoiler with your hand, or have an assistant hold the trunk and spoiler in place. Remove the last two bolts that mount the spoiler. If someone is not holding the bumper, the spoiler is likely to fall off.

  • Lift the spoiler from the deck lid to remove it. To reinstall the spoiler, line up the mounting holes with the holes in the trunk. Have someone support the spoiler while you tighten the bolts.
