Tools Needed to Paint a Car

There are many tools necessary to paint a car. Most tools are necessary for the prep stages--you will inevitably spend up to 70 percent of your time on prep work, as that is the most important stage. Safety tools are also necessary to ensure the safety of the person painting the car.

Tools for Safety

  • Respirator mask: Prevents the respiration system from being hurt by air-born chemicals.

Nitrile gloves: Keeps toxic paint--and freshly sanded toxic paint dust--off your skin.

Protective eye wear: Prevents air-born chemicals from contacting the ocular system.

Tools for Prep Work

  • Primer/sealer: Preps the metal prior to being painted.

Masking tape/paper: Covers the areas of the auto-body you don't want covered in primer or paint.

Sanding boards: Holds the sandpaper sheets.

Sandpaper: Sands with 80- to 220-grit power, which aids the priming process.

Glazing putty or body filler: To fix cracks, dents and other imperfections on the auto body.

Tools for Painting the Car

  • Spray gun: To spray primer, automotive paint and clear coat.

Automotive Paint: The coat of paint for your car; it must contrast with your primer.

Clear coat: Seals in the color and leaves a nice shiny coat over the paint layer.
