Automotive Gold Leaf Techniques

Gold leafing is a cosmetic technique used in various forms of painting and design to enhance the appearance of something with thin sheets, or leafs, of gold. This technique is often found in paintings and decorations but it can also be used in the automotive world. Gold leafing can be used on vehicles to enhance a decal or painted-on design such as logos, pinstripes and murals. There are several tips and techniques to be used in order to get the most out of an automotive gold leaf job.

Applying Glue

  • Knowing how to apply the glue and how long to wait once it's applied is paramount to achieving the desired effect from your gold leaf. Special automotive glue can be obtained at most auto stores and specialty craft stores. This glue is transparent and thin enough to be applied with a brush in small areas, which is absolutely necessary for use with gold leaf.

Gold leaf isn't meant to cover large spaces at once, instead it's more of a small highlight to enhance a larger design. As such, you'll be applying the glue to very small areas that you've already marked with a light marker. Use an extremely thin lettering paintbrush to apply a layer of the automotive glue where you want the leaf to eventually go. Be careful not to leave the glue uneven or in globs, but instead try to apply as uniform and thin a layer as possible. The trick is to then wait until the glue is not dry but instead just tacky. Glue residue should be sticky to the touch but shouldn't come off on contact. This will be sufficient to hold the leaf on but not so wet still that the leaf slides around and is easily messed up while drying.

Applying the Gold Leaf

  • Applying the actual gold leaf to the now semi-dry glue is a delicate process best attempted very slowly and deliberately. The leaf is applied by laying a piece of the gold sheet on top of the glue, pressing it into the adhesive then gently lifting the sheet away. In doing this the gold itself will transfer off the backing paper and onto the glue.

When doing this, use a small sheet of gold instead of a large piece to allow you to better position it and peel it free. Tear off a piece only slightly larger than the amount you'll be applying to the vehicle. Press it gently onto the glue, starting at the bottom of the design and smoothly pressing upwards. Use a piece of tissue paper between your pressing hand and the gold sheet to help smooth the entire piece against the glue. Press firmly then gently peel the sheet away. The gold leafing will tear off as you remove the sheet, remaining adhered to the glue. Some excess gold will tear off as well, which you can then gently brush away with a soft-bristled brush. The gold that you wanted on the vehicle, that is where you applied the glue, will remain firmly in place.

Future Care

  • Gold leafing on an automobile requires the same care and maintenance as any other aftermarket paint or vinyl application. To avoid having it come undone over time due to exposure to the elements it should we washed and waxed fairly regularly. The protective clearcoat layer of automotive wax will help keep the leaf in place and prevent it from being destroyed and cracked front daily wear and tear while out on the road.
