How to Install a Car TV Antenna

A TV antenna must be installed on a car in order to receive clear pictures on the television mounted in the vehicle. You can buy a automobile television antenna from an electronics store or an auto supply store. Installing this type of antenna is a relatively straightforward process if you have basic do-it-yourself knowledge and a few common tools. There is no need to drill holes in the auto body for either the aerial or wiring.

Things You'll Need

  • Automobile TV antenna
  • Window Cleaner
  • Chamois or Soft Cloth
  • Fabric Tape
  • Clean the outside of the rear window thoroughly and clean the inside surface as well. Select a position for the antenna that does not block the rear view mirror, the top brake light or the movement of the trunk lid.

  • Remove the backing on the antenna base to expose the adhesive surface. Press this surface against the interior rear window at the location you have chosen, making sure it is securely in place.

  • Remove the backing from the antenna coupler and attach it to the inside of the window directly opposite the antenna base. Wait for one hour to allow the adhesive to securely bond to the window.

  • Run the antenna cable from the coupler down to the bottom of the passenger seat. Tuck the cable under trim and carpeting to disguise and protect it.

  • Attach the connector at the end of the antenna cable to socket for the television receiver which is usually located at the bottom of the passenger seat. This connection is normally marked "Antenna Input" on the receiver. Secure exposed antenna wire to the interior surfaces using fabric tape.
