How to Paint With CARC Paint

Chemical agent resistant coating, or CARC, is a type of paint used on combat vehicles and other military equipment, protecting them from chemical spills and making them much more durable as a result. There are several layers required before CARC can be applied, and the final coat is toxic and should be applied carefully in a well-ventilated area. With some basic precautions you'll be able to apply CARC paint yourself.

Things You'll Need

  • CARC pretreatments
  • CARC primer
  • CARC topcoat
  • Thick protective gloves
  • Air line respirator or chemical cartridge respirator
  • Safety goggles
  • Paintbrush
  • Put on all protective gear, including a respirator, goggles. and thick gloves. Work in a well ventilated area with no flames or sparks. Don't apply to anything that will exceed 400 degrees fahrenheit, as it will produce toxic fumes.

  • Apply the CARC pretreatments about a half a millimeter thick. All of the CARC treatments may come in a spray form or with their own applicator. If not, use a paintbrush. Wait for the pretreatment to dry, somewhere between two and six hours depending on the size of the object being painted.

  • Apply the CARC primer one to one and a half millimeters thick and allow it to dry for about 12-24 hours.

  • Put on all the safety gear again and make sure there are no holes before applying the topcoat. If any of the other layers have bothered your skin or eyes, buy better gloves and goggles before proceeding. Apply the CARC topcoat about two millimeters thick, and wait 24 hours for it to dry. Leave the object in a well ventilated area and make sure there is no exposure to flame or sparks.
