How to Find the Paint Code for a Ford Pickup

Car paint jobs take a lot of wear and tear from road debris, harsh weather, dents from other cars and damage from accidents. This is especially true for pickup trucks, which are often used as work vehicles. Once the paint is scratched, it should be quickly repaired to avoid rust damaging the bodywork beneath. To order a matching shade from a paint dealer, you will need the truck's paint code. Finding it on a Ford pickup truck is easy.

  • Open the driver's side door of the truck.

  • Look for a label attached to the edge of the door, in the area that would be hidden when the door is shut. It might also be on the door jamb. The label will have multiple lines of text. On modern models it will likely also have a barcode. Almost all Ford vehicles have their codes listed in this spot. If yours is not, check the interior of the glove compartment or the inside of the engine compartment for a similar label.

  • Look for a line on the label--usually toward the bottom, below the barcode--that says "Exterior Paint" or "EXT PNT." The two-letter code printed beside or above this line is the paint code.

  • Call Ford customer service at 1-800-392-3673 and request the paint code for your truck. You will need to provide the vehicle identification number (VIN), which can be found on your truck's sales and registration documents.
