How to Remove Rust Off a Garage Floor

Removing rust from any surface is challenging. Once metal starts to oxidize and corrode, the process usually cannot be reversed. You can remove the rust from a garage floor if the rust was deposited by a rusting automobile, or if the rust originated on the floor (in the case of steel floor linings) using a just a few household items and some elbow grease. After you've finished removing the rust, you will need to treat the floor to help prevent rust stains or rust itself from reforming.

Things You'll Need

  • Large steel wool pads
  • Broom
  • Dust pan
  • Soap
  • Water
  • Sponge
  • Clean towel
  • Scrub the floor using steel wool pads to remove any loose rust from the floor.

  • Sweep up any loose rust with a broom and dust pan.

  • Wash the area with soap and water. Continue to use the steel wool pad with soapy water until all of the rust is gone. Then, use a sponge to clean the area.

  • Dry the area with a clean towel and inspect the area for any remaining rust. Repeat step three if there is any rust left over, and then dry the area with a towel.
