How to Remove Sea Salt From a Car

While salt has innumerable uses such as cleaning, deodorizing and creating traction on snowy roads in the winter, its corrosive effects can also wreak havoc on your vehicle. Caked salt can cause your vehicle's undercarriage to rust as well as cause damage to paint finish. Sea salt deposits on your car or truck can be a problem for those living in coastal areas and can affect cars the same way as road salt. Regular removal of sea salt deposits with a solution of baking soda and water will keep your vehicle looking like new.

Things You'll Need

  • Baking soda
  • Water
  • Rag
  • Soft cloth
  • Sponge
  • Wash problem areas with a solution of baking soda and warm water. Use about 1/4 cup of baking soda for every cup of water and add more baking soda if necessary. Dip a rag into the solution and gently buff the affected areas until clean.

  • Rinse affected areas thoroughly with water following cleaning. Wipe down with a soft cloth.

  • Make a paste from baking soda and water for extra-tough stains. Rub paste on stains with a damp sponge and rinse well.
