How to Clean Up Spills on Car Upholstery

Its easy to spill food and drinks while the car is moving. One problem with cleaning up spills is knowing which stain remover to use. Many detergents and stain removers can bleach out the carpet in car upholstery. Get the right tools for the job and clean with ease.

Things You'll Need

  • 4 Clean towels
  • Neutral detergent
  • Water
  • Bristled brush
  • Blot spills with a towel to keep it from spreading.

  • Soak the spill with water to keep it from setting into the upholstery as a stain.

  • Spray the area with a neutral detergent mixed with water. A neutral detergent has a pH of 7 and it won't alter the color of the car interior. The following is a list of common detergent and water mixtures: neutral detergent and water (1:20), mild ammonia and water (1:5), distilled white vinegar and water (1:1).

  • Rub the area in a circular motion with a clean towel. For hard-to-remove substances use a bristled brush to work the cleaner into the upholstery.

  • Remove the soap with a clean towel and water. Blot the water spot to quicken the drying process.
