In 2001, Ford released the Escape, giving customers a smaller SUV choice than the existing Explorer and Expedition models. The 2003 Escape came standard with a front-wheel drive system and a 127-horsepower, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine. The 2003 Escape also came standard with disc brakes. A type of hydraulic fluid, known as DOT 3 brake fluid, pressurized by the master cylinder, powered this brake system. Checking and adding brake fluid to the 2003 Escape is a task that any auto owner should learn to do.
Open the Escape's hood and locate the brake master cylinder reservoir -- the translucent, plastic reservoir on the driver's side, rear of the engine compartment.
Twist the brake master cylinder reservoir cap counterclockwise to remove it.
Check the level of the brake fluid relative to the "Max" and "Min" lines on the reservoir -- you may need to clean the master cylinder reservoir with a shop cloth to get a clear view of the lines and the fluid.
Add DOT 3 brake fluid to the master cylinder reservoir, only if the level is lower than the "Min" line. There is no need to add fluid if the level is above the "Min" line.
Close the brake master cylinder reservoir cap and close the Escape's hood.
