Rust eats away at metal until the structural integrity of the object is lost. Rust-proofing is the best way to keep rust from forming and causing serious damage to your car, boat, tool or furniture. Rust starts very small so it is important to examine any metal object that is often exposed to moisture. Getting rid of tiny rust spots prevents them from becoming large and expensive repair jobs. Rust-proofing is simple to do and it lasts a long time.
Examine the object you want to rust-proof. Check to see if there are any dents or scratches that can be the starting point for rust.
Scrub away any rust with a wire brush or fine grade sandpaper. Scrub until you get to the bare metal.
Apply a rust-proof primer to the object with a paint brush. There are many rust-proof primers on the market made for a variety of materials such as metal. The rust-proofing provides a barrier to the moisture in the air that contributes to rusting.
Apply touch-up paint, if needed, with a paint brush. Allow to dry completely.
Apply a wax or an oil specially designed for the object. There are waxes and oils made for cars, boats, appliances and other items. Mineral oil is a good all-around lubricant. With some of these lubricants the oil or wax seeps into any porous materials and fills them in so moisture can't enter.
