How to Install a Dodge RAM Air Conditioning Clutch

The fan clutch on a Dodge Ram engages the air conditioning system. The clutch is located between the pulley and the compressor. Air conditioning is standard on Dodge trucks, so the old clutch will need to be replaced. Replacement of the clutch will only take a few minutes as the clutch is held on by four small bolts. A bad clutch will prevent the air conditioning from starting when needed. The clutch can be purchased at any Dodge dealer or any automotive parts store.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Socket set
  • Open the hood for access to the engine compartment. Locate the tensioner pulley on the middle of the engine.

  • Place a socket wrench in the square slot in the tensioner pulley and push down. This will loosen the belt enough to take off the air conditioner pulley.

  • Unbolt the pulley with a socket wrench. There will be a bolt in the middle of the pulley. Pull the pulley off by hand.

  • Unbolt the air conditioner clutch with a socket wrench. There will be four small bolts to remove. Replace with the new clutch. Tighten the bolts with a socket wrench.

  • Place the pulley back on to the outside of the clutch. Tighten the nut with a socket wrench to secure the pulley.

  • Push the tensioner pulley down with the socket wrench. Place the belt over the air conditioner pulley and slowly release the tensioner. This will tighten the belt.
