Exide is one of three companies that makes almost all the lead-acid car batteries sold in the U.S. The company has its U.S. headquarters in Milton, Georgia. Some of the many lines of batteries Exide manufacturers employ advanced technology to extend the battery life.
The three most important aspects of a car battery are its cold cranking amps (CCAs), its group size and the reserve capacity (RC). The CCAs refer to the amount of power your starter needs to fire the engine and the group size classifies the battery by its physical dimensions. The reserve capacity indicates how long the battery can power a car should the alternator fail.
Exide uses absorbed glass mat (AGM) technology in its top-of-the-line batteries. Instead of free-floating liquid inside the battery, the company installs glass fibers that act like sponges to stabilize the fluid mix inside the batteries, so that contact for charging and discharging the battery is more efficient.
Choosing a battery based on the harshness of the climate can be a consideration. The AGM batteries that Exide and other companies make provide a stable product for exceptionally hot or cold climates, reducing the incidence of dead batteries in extreme weather.
