Make sure the vehicle is off. Open the hood and inspect the battery for any corrosion. Find the battery, which will be on the right side of the engine. Lift the post cover on the battery terminal and make sure there is no corrosion. Brush with a steel brush if corrosion is present.
Check any lights that may appear lit up on the dash, these are called SES codes. Look to see which picture icon is lit up. Look inside the owner's manual and compare the light appearing on the dash to any picture in the owner's manual.
Check all fluid levels in the car. Check oil by pulling out the dipstick and wiping off with a cloth. Place the dipstick back down into the oil reservoir. Check to make sure that the oil is not black, and is filled to the notch in the dipstick. Wipe off stick and return to reservoir.
