How to Check Wheel Sensors on a Chevrolet Venture

The Chevrolet Venture as Chevy's second minivan design, which was destroyed in sales by competitors. The Venture was a rushed design and had some poor crash ratings as well as near constant reliability problems. The Venture did come with anti-lock brake which require functional sensors on each wheel to detect spin. The manufacturer used magnetic sensors to detect the spin of the wheel, however these magnets make the sensors prone to dust accumulation. Checking for debris and cleaning the sensors is an important part of Chevrolet Venture maintenance.

Things You'll Need

  • Car jack
  • Jack stand
  • Tire iron
  • Wrench set
  • Rag
  • Windex
  • Park your Chevrolet Venture in an open, flat area. A driveway or large garage will do. Jack the minivan up on all four corners. First, slide the car jack under the frame, jack the corner up, then slide a jack stand under the jack point. The minivan does not need to be high up, the wheels just need to be out of contact with the ground. Unbolt the wheels with a tire iron and remove all four wheels.

  • Unbolt the wheel speed sensor from the front wheels. The sensor module will be bolted onto the brake assembly on the front disc brake with a single bolt. Pull the module out and inspect the facing of the sensor. There will be a magnetic circle that could be covered with debris. Use a rag and some Windex to wipe it off. The sensor housing should not have any cracks in it. Check the wire leading from the sensor as well for any damage or exposed wiring. Repeat this procedure for the other front wheel sensor and then bolt them back in.

  • Unbolt the rear wheel speed sensor from the rear control arm. It is a small black module like the front sensor module. Inspect the housing for any cracks and the wire for any tears. Clean off the facing of the sensor like you did with the front sensors. Repeat this process for the other rear wheel as well. Bolt the sensor back in when done.

  • Bolt the tires back onto the minivan and then lower the minivan off the jack stands. Take the Venture for a test drive to see if the ABS sensors operate adequately. If the ABS light lights up on the dash, then one of the sensors may not be seated properly and needs to be re-bolted.
