How to Build Your Own Strut Tower Brace

Building a strut tower brace for your automobile can be a challenging, but rewarding way to modify your vehicle and help reduce the stress on your auto's suspension. You will need to create mounts that will sit atop each strut tower as well as creating the tubular metal support beam that goes between each mount. You will also need access to raw metal, machining equipment, and welding equipment.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Aluminum piping
  • Aluminum sheeting
  • Power drill
  • Jigsaw
  • Set of metric sockets
  • Socket wrench
  • Welder
  • Design the strut tower on paper before beginning to work with any metal. You will need to measure the distance between the two strut towers to determine how long the strut brace should be. Measure the strut towers with a tape measure to determine the measurements of the base plates.

  • Cut the metal plates using the jigsaw and use the power drill to drill holes in the appropriate locations of the base plates. These will serve as the mounting points for the base plates. Test fit the base plates on to the strut towers before cutting the metal brace.

  • Cut the metal brace with the jigsaw so that it matches the length specified in your design drawings.

  • Weld the brace to the ends of the base plates using your welder, then allow the welds to cure for 3 hours.

  • Mount the strut brace to the strut tower using the socket wrench and appropriately-sized socket to secure the brace to the strut towers.
