How to Change an S2000 Convertible Top

You can replace the convertible top on your Honda S2000 in a single afternoon. The convertible soft top is held in place with a few screws. The replacement top simply rolls over the supporting bows, where screws hold it in place as well. Convertible cars are all subject to from wear and tear on their convertible tops that can result in drooping and leaking. Additionally, soft top convertibles like the one on the S2000 are more prone to damage or vandalism.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver set
  • Replacement top
  • Drive the Honda S200 into your garage or other covered parking area. Place the S2000 into Park and pull the parking brake up before turning the car off. Disconnect the convertible top latches (the hardware that secures the top) at the front of the convertible top so that it disengages from the windshield, but do not fold it back.

  • Unscrew the eight Phillips-head screws from the front bow of the convertible top. They will be along the front edge. Keep the screws somewhere where they won't get lost; for example, the cup holder. Peel off the weather strip and place it to the side for re-use if the replacement top does not have one (third-party replacement tops may not).

  • Fold the convertible fabric all the way back and lay it on the trunk, but do not fold the supporting bows back. Fold the passenger seat down and into the back shelf of the S2000. Unscrew the eight screws that hold the back end of the fabric on the weather seal. Pull the fabric off and be careful not to bend the rear plastic window, as it can become brittle over time, and may crack sharply enough to cut you or nick the paint.

  • Lay the replacement top down over the trunk. Line up the screw holes along the rear weather strip with the bottom of the replacement fabric. Thread the screws in by hand first, then tighten the screws down with a screwdriver. Roll the fabric up and over the supporting bows to the front bow.

  • Roll the fabric over and then screw the weather strip onto the end of the front bow. First, insert the screws into the holes in the weather strip. Then line the screws up with the holes in the fabric end. Push the screws into the screw holes and then screw them down in place. Pull the top flush with the top of the wind screen and engage the latches.
